[Short]
Tax document extraction solved the wrong problem for half the people who need it.
For compliance and tax preparation, automated extraction works: wages reconciled, totals verified, data moved to the right system. That use case is largely handled.
For financial planners, the extraction logic has to be different. A planner looking at a client’s 1040 and W-2 is not reconciling wages. They are looking for planning signals: dependent counts that determine child tax credit eligibility, refunds applied to next year’s taxes rather than paid out (a cash flow decision the client made quietly that the advisor should know about), and benefit deductions that affect taxable income but get absorbed into top-line figures.
At firms building tax planning modules alongside tax preparation, the data model has to reflect that distinction. W-2 data is more granular than the 1040 for wages, so the planning layer has to know which source to trust, and flag when neither covers what the planner needs.
LEA handles that extraction layer, pulling from both documents and surfacing the planning signals before the second client meeting.
The forward implication: firms that build planning logic into their extraction will identify wallet share opportunities faster than firms still running tax data through a prep-only lens.
