Something has shifted this year in how RIA firms approach automation. The skepticism is gone; we don’t get “does AI actually work” questions anymore. What we get instead is a much harder question: “prove it on our data, not a demo.”

That’s a meaningful change. A year ago, the barrier was convincing ops leaders that AI could handle real documents — not clean CSVs, not structured forms, but the messy PDFs and inconsistent naming conventions that arrive from actual clients. That conversation is over.

The new conversation is about whether a vendor’s results in a controlled environment translate to the firm’s specific data, with the firm’s specific systems, and the firm’s specific compliance requirements. Demo environments are curated. Prod is not.

The firms asking this question are further along than they often realize. Asking for proof on live data means they know what success looks like — they have a workflow they want to automate, a metric they want to move, a staff hour they want to recover. That’s not skepticism. That’s specificity.

Our answer is always the same: show us the data, and we’ll show you the output.
